Lab Technician

Job Title: Research & Development Lab Technician

Reports to: Chief Technical Officer/Chief Metallurgist

Department: Research & Development

Location: Marinette, Wisconsin

Status: Full Time

Classification: Non-Exempt

General Summary:

Works with and supports the Chief Technical Officer/Chief Metallurgist for the alloy development program.

Essential Job Functions Include:

  • Prepare samples for R&D Lab wear and other testing

  • Machine various property testing samples including thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, compression, corrosion, and wear testing samples

  • Build and modify various experimental devices. Calibrate and de-bug these testers

  • Perform deflection, pulse load wear testing, Rockwell and micro-hardness testing, sample insert dimension stability test, and magnetic test

  • Record all test results in computer for analysis, and keep record books of all test data and photographs. Maintain storage of all samples before and after testing

Secondary Job Functions:

  • Grind or turn production samples for scrap evaluation

  • Conduct heat treating of samples and parts as needed

  • Run some precise lab tests

  • Cross training in order to obtain ability to perform routine tests run by other foundry lab personnel periodically

  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:​​

  • Must have excellent time management skills, problem-solving skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks

  • Excellent business writing, editing and proofreading skills

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required in order to properly store test data

  • Strong communication skills

  • Knowledge of software required to record and analyze experimental data, such as Excel

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to actively move through office space to work with staff

  • Vision must be correctable to allow reading/viewing of documents and computer screen

  • Hearing must be correctable to allow extensive use of telephone and voicemail as well as participate in discussions among large groups

  • Coordination must allow performance of experiments and required development of new machinery

Education and Experience:

  • Prior experience in a metallurgical lab, 2-5 years is preferred

  • Minimum education level: High school diploma; Associate, Technical, BS, Engineering preferred
